Summer Weekend Hikes

August 15 - August 18

We offer guided hiking tours each weekend on both Saturday and Sunday.  These hikes are a great way to get out in the woods and learn about local history along the way.  They are free to guests and $10 to non-guests.  Please inquire at the Front Desk or the Outdoor Center for details and to sign up.  Stop by or call (518) 251-2444.

 

Thursday 10am—Hooper Mine:

This easy, laid back hike is filled with information on the mine and it’s connection to our historic lodge. Discover abandoned mines’ shacks along the path, search for clues from the past and discover garnet em- bedded in the rocks of the old mine.

Level – Easy.

Time—Approximately 1 hour.

 

Friday 9 am—Balm of Gilead:

The trail starts right from the Garnet Hill Outdoor Center and the hike takes you to a magnificent cliff on the Balm of Gilead that overlooks Thirteenth Lake and the mountains beyond.

Level – Moderate.

Time—Approximately 1.5 hour.

 

Saturday 1:00 pm—Kayak Tour:

This adventure will take hikers onto the beautiful 13th lake for sightseeing and boating instruction. Learn about the loons, beavers and other wildlife that call our lake home.

Difficult level—Moderate.

Time— Approximately 2 hours.

 

Saturday 6:30 pm—Hooper Mine Sunset Hike:

This easy, laid back hike is filled with information on the mine and it’s connection to our historic lodge. Discover abandoned mines’ shacks along the path, search for clues from the past and discover garnet embedded in the rocks of the old mine. Once you reach the top, enjoy a gorgeous sunset (weather permitting) and return to the lodge      before dusk.

Level – Easy.

Time—Approximately 2 hours.

 

Sunday 10 am—Hooper Loop:

This easy, laid back hike is filled with information on the mine and it’s connection to our historic lodge. We will walk from the Lodge up to the rim of Hooper Mine, where we will be able to look down into the pit of the old mine. From there, we will continue to William Blake Pond, home to plenty of wildlife, including deer and beaver.

Level—Easy.

Time—Approximately 3 hours
