10 Outdoor Team-Building Activities at Garnet Hill

Posted in General, Things to Do

There’s never an offseason for team-building, especially in today’s corporate world. Employees come and go seemingly in the blink of an eye, placing a ton of pressure on the CEO, director, or manager to speedily sew up the wound. Oftentimes, a team outing is the perfect way to help the team gel, particularly when there’s a sizable amount of fresh faces in the office. It’s nearly impossible to forge lasting working relationships by partaking in quick, five-minute team-building activities on the office lawn. Competitive, Olympic-style games often promote rivalry rather than teamwork. Here at Garnet Hill Lodge, however, we take a different approach by embracing nature’s many pathways toward unison.

Outdoor Team-Building Activities | Teamwork in the Mountains

Very few Adirondack Mountain resorts have a dedicated conference, retreat, and meeting staff on-site. Garnet Hill Lodge was built in the lasting tradition of 19th-century Adirondack Great Camps, so we know a thing or two about hosting large groups who share common goals. All outdoor team-building activities can be arranged swiftly and painlessly by our staff. And most corporate team-building runs through our on-site Outdoor Center, a centralized, four-season activity hub. We can, of course, also arrange an off-site adventure if need be. Hopefully, the following 10 team outing ideas provide a proper glimpse of a potential adventure-based retreat to North River, NY.

  1. Hiking: There’s a seemingly endless array of well-marked hiking trails in these dense woods. You can use as many parables and metaphors as you like, but sometimes climbing mountains, exploring abandoned mines, and learning about the region’s flora and fauna is ideal for the team’s collective soul.
  2. Campfire Stories: Nothing elicits more in-depth conversation among co-workers than a crackling campfire under Upstate New York’s twinkling skyline.
  3. Yoga: Carrie Kaufman’s methodology helps each individual envision their future both inside and outside of the company.
  4. Canoeing: Paddle together toward a post, and learn about each other along the way.
  5. Geocaching: The “world’s largest treasure hunt” is an easy way for groups to split up into smaller teams in search of a unique, heartfelt reward.
  6. Mountain Biking: As noted in this extensive trail map, there are miles upon miles of well-marked routes on or near our hillside property. Team members can either race toward a “finish line” or simply embrace Mother Nature’s beauty on a sturdy bike.
  7. Whitewater Rafting: We collaborate with six local rafting companies, all of which are just a short drive from the lodge. It’s tough to top the teamwork obtained on a rugged whitewater excursion.
  8. Snowshoeing: No, we didn’t forget about winter. Guided snowshoeing, much like hiking, is a great way to get employees talking about things outside of work. Co-workers often become friends during such outdoor team-building activities.
  9. Forest Bathing: Sometimes, a team needs only silence, the forest, and quiet reflection to recharge its batteries.
  10. A Scavenger Hunt: Yes, this one takes quite a bit of preparation and planning, but scavenger hunts can be completely customized to match your company’s brand and core values.
