If you and your family have been feeling a little cooped up at home, then a winter getaway in the Adirondacks is the perfect remedy. Here at Garnet Hill Lodge in North River, we offer families, groups, and other lodging guests a place to relax and miles of snow-covered trails to explore. Plan a winter getaway to our rustic Adirondack lodge and reconnect with nature and each other.
Our four-season lodging property is a mountain retreat where guests can step outside the front door and enjoy a variety of recreational activities, such as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, mountain biking, and more. While all of our activities are accessible for beginners, snowshoeing in particular is fun and easy to do for kids and adults. Over the years, we’ve hosted everything from family and group reunions to romantic getaways, birthdays, and other functions.
This winter, we’re ready to welcome families and groups who would like to spend quality time together for a weekend or even a whole week. Our comfortable accommodations include 16 balcony and traditional guest rooms in the Log House (our main lodge) and nine more rooms in the Birches and Tea House cottages. Features and amenities such as adjoining rooms, rooms with multiple beds, and in-room televisions make our cottages well-suited for families and small groups.

Winter typically arrives early in the Adirondacks, and during some years, you can look forward to cross-country skiing here by Thanksgiving. When snow covers our property, we groom our 55 km of cross-country skiing trails with set tracks and skating lanes to ensure everyone has a fun experience. No matter your age or skill level, you’ll quickly experience the joy of cross-country skiing through scenic and snowy woods.
For the 2020-2021 winter season, our trail network will be open and trail passes are included with your stay – a perk of staying overnight! All other visitors can buy either a day or season pass. The Outdoor Center will open by appointment only for equipment purchases, and daily ski and equipment rentals can be made online or at the Outdoor Center’s convenient walk-up service windows.
Are you or your kids new to cross-country skiing? Our Ski School will offer private and small group (five or fewer people who are related or traveling together) ski lessons at an affordable price. Lessons are one-hour long and can be booked by calling the Outdoor Center at 518-251-2150.
Cross-country skiing isn’t the only way you can experience our winter wonderland of trails. You can also go snowshoeing, which is one of the fastest growing winter sports because anyone can do it, even your kids. It’s the perfect alternative for non-skiers and others in your group who want to try something different. If you can walk, then you can head out and start exploring the trails on a pair of snowshoes.
Our extensive snowshoeing trail system features six different routes that intertwine with our ski trails, providing 15 km of trails to traverse. While some routes are flat and ideal for beginners, others are challenging but well worth it to see the fantastic views at the end. Snowshoe rentals are available, and they are lightweight and simple to put on.
There are so many fun ways to spend a winter getaway at our Adirondack lodge. In addition to skiing and snowshoeing, you can rent a fat tire bike and ride on the trails, warm up by the outdoor fire pits or indoor fireplace, and order delicious takeout food from our restaurant. At the end of the day, you and your family/group can wind down for a good night’s sleep.
