The Johnsburg Fish and Game Club began what is nationally known as the longest running canoe competition. Every year the Derby has become the spring thing to do for both paddlers and spectators. At first it was a one-day eight-mile downriver race. That first year there were 44 entrants and 25 craft on the river.

On the first Saturday and Sunday in May participants enter the Hudson and begin the race down river for the coveted prize and honor of WINNING The Derby.

The schedule includes the Downriver Race, the Novice Slalom, the Giant Slalom, and the Not-So-Whitewater Race which is 2-5 miles for beginners to intermediate level paddlers following the slalom races. Saturday and Sunday registration and packet pick-up is 9am.

Saturday – 11am start for the Slalom Races. Not-So-Whitewater Race starts immediately following the slalom.

A party, music, prizes and awards follow – this in itself is a tradition.

On Sunday is the Whitewater Derby Downriver Race at 11am with awards being presented at the Finish Line in Riparius.

Grab your paddle, canoe or kayak and join us in celebrating over 60 years of springtime Adirondack Fun!
